Major crashes on interstate result in deaths, delays

Crashes in Tennessee involving commercial trucks can affect large numbers of people. Some of the effects may be short-term, i.e., a temporary traffic delay, while others can have more permanent consequences that affect the lives of those involved in the collision and/or their family members for years to come.

Three known deaths, as well as widespread traffic delays, resulted from two separate multi-vehicle crashes in Arkansas last Friday. Though occurring along the same stretch of Interstate 40 between Forrest City and West Memphis, the two wrecks occurred approximately 2 1/2 hours apart from one another. There does not seem to be any evidence of a relationship between the causality of either collision to the other, although details as to what caused both crashes are not currently available.

The first of the two crashes occurred at approximately 8:50 a.m. on Friday morning between mile markers 259 and 260. It involved multiple vehicles, including two commercial carriers, and resulted in one known fatality. The second collision occurred three to four miles away, near mile marker 256. There have been two fatalities confirmed as a result of that crash, which reportedly involved at least three vehicles.

Law enforcement closed both lanes of the interstate on Friday following the crashes, redirecting traffic onto U.S. Highway 70. The detours caused traffic delays lasting two to three hours.

One of the commercial carriers involved in the first collision was from FedEx, which released a statement expressing cooperation with authorities investigating the crash and extending condolences to the friends and family members of those affected.

As one traveler forced to detour around the collisions observed, the loss of life involved in a truck crash puts the temporary inconvenience of traffic delays into perspective. Those who have sustained injuries and loss in such a wreck may find it helpful to consult an attorney.
