Can companies help truckers avoid distractions?

When you are in charge of a fleet of trucks in Tennessee, you may think it is the responsibility of your truck drivers to ensure they are not distracted on the road. However, there are many things you can do to promote safe driving.

Your truckers may be distracted on the road for many reasons. According to Fleet Owner magazine, truck drivers may use their cellphones to send text messages or make phone calls. However, if one of your drivers has not gotten enough sleep or is experiencing conflict at home, he or she can easily be distracted, even when the cellphone is out of sight. Because of this, it is important for you to know how you can emphasize safety so none of your truckers are distracted.

It is a good idea to ensure that your in-cab technology will not distract truck drivers. You should typically install these devices at the same level as other instruments so truckers do not need to look down to read a display. Additionally, it is important to make sure truckers will still have an unobstructed view of the mirrors and windows. You may also want to make sure that all of your truckers understand your company's policy about technology. If you have a zero tolerance policy, it is a good idea to make sure that none of your dispatchers contact truck drivers when they know the truckers are still on the road.

To combat general distraction, you may want to teach defensive driving techniques to your truck drivers. Train your drivers to ask themselves what they would do if certain situations occurred on the road. This can help them stay alert and aware of their surroundings as they drive.
