How can you combat motorcycle unawareness?

As a motorcyclist in Tennessee, you understand the risks associated with riding alongside covered vehicles. Motorcycle unawareness is a huge problem that people like you face every time you get on the road. But are there ways that you can combat this issue?

The National Safety Council reminds drivers that motorcycles are everywhere, and that not paying attention to them or noticing them can be a dangerous and potentially deadly risk and a big factor in motorcycle crashes. Behaviors can be changed on the part of both other drivers and motorcyclists to diminish these chances.

For motorcyclists, you should always abide by traffic laws. Never go in the opposing direction that traffic is traveling in. Make sure to wear bright, eye-catching clothing. Have reflectors and lights on your outfit where possible. Ensure that the head and tail lights on your motorcycle are working. Always wear a helmet. Signal before turning, and beware of a driver's blind spot.

For drivers, make sure that you give pause before changing lanes or pulling out into traffic. Most people are looking for other vehicles and forget to check for small motorcycles, which can easily dart out where you least expect it. Distracted driving also plays a role in motorcycle crashes. Make sure that you're paying full attention to the road and vehicles around you, especially before you make sudden moves.

Unfortunately, not all crashes can be avoided. However, following these steps can at least diminish your chances of getting involved in one. If you have been in a crash, you may want to contact an attorney to see what methods of compensation are available to you.
