What incentivizes drivers to stay off their phones?

Even with the creation of Bluetooth, drivers continue to engage in risky driving behaviors using their handheld devices. And it's getting worse.

A recent study by Zendrive recorded data on 100 billion hours of driving. The results showed that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's estimates on distracted drivers were 100 times worse than previously thought. The data revealed that more than half a million drivers are distracted each day.

Is there a way to curb the epidemic? How can you resist the urge to become a part of the statistic?

Distracted drivers provide new insight on safe driving incentives

A survey by Claims Journal asked drivers to cite their greatest incentives to put down their phones. Shockingly, 79 percent of drivers polled said that their number one incentive to stay safe is their car insurance. The survey referenced smartphone apps that can track driving performance and provide feedback to insurance companies that can affect their rates.

Unfortunately, only 22 percent of the survey participants reported that their insurers offer such technology, although 60 percent of them wished that they would. Other top contenders for incentives included distracted driving laws and the offering of gift cards or promotional items.

How to stay attentive at the wheel

Experts have provided various ways that can help drivers resist their temptations. Drivers can silence their phones. Another method that has proven to be effective is putting your phone in your trunk so it stays out of sight and out of reach. Lastly, you may want to consider installing an app on your phone as noted above to hold yourself accountable.

Distracted driving is 100 percent preventable. By taking steps to put down your phone you can help to reduce the risk of a wreck and injury to yourself and others. Remember - it only takes a second to change a life when you're on the road.
