When Talcum Powder Causes Cancer

Talcum powder is a common household product that has the very real potential of causing mesothelioma and other forms of cancer in the long run. Applied to everything from a baby's bottom to finished hairstyles, the product may be one of the deadliest products in the American cupboard.

The dangers of talcum powder are just now coming to the surface. Most recently, Johnson and Johnson lost a significant case in California courts stemming from cancers caused by their talcum based baby powders. To date, the company faces nearly 5,000 pending lawsuits over the same issue. These lawsuits have been filed by everyone from barbers and hairdressers, to factory workers and day care providers who use talc on a frequent basis as part of their daily jobs. In fact, the Johnson and Johnson lawsuit and others are part of a national trend that is making it possible for individuals to pursue compensation for cancers caused by some of the most common household products in the country.

How Talcum Causes Cancer

Talcum powder may contain small amounts of asbestos including tremolite, amosite, and crocidolite. These are forms of magnesium silicate which are highly toxic. When these substances are inhaled they can become lodged in the lungs or within the pleural cavity and cause mesothelioma. Even small amounts ingested in minuscule quantities over a long period of time can cause serious damage to the respiratory system. Exposure to talcum powder containing asbestos fibers may also cause cancers of other organ systems including ovarian cancer, and potentially uterine cancer for women who are past menopause. In these instances, the cancers may form after the talc is introduced internally via feminine hygiene products. These cancers can take anywhere from 10 to 50 years to manifest themselves.

Pursuing Cancer Claims

Johnson and Johnson is not the only company to use talcum powder in their products. It is a common ingredient that is found in everything from aftershave to body powder. A product liability attorney can help research the products in question and determine the most appropriate method of pursuing a product liability suit against the manufacturer.

In addition to product liability lawsuits, individuals may also be able to pursue personal injury lawsuits and wrongful death lawsuits. A product liability attorney in Tennessee can help determine which lawsuit is most appropriate based on the circumstances and impacts that exposure to toxic talcum powder has created.
