Slip and Fall Statistics

Slip and fall accidents are extremely common and may happen at home, in the workplace or at public facilities. Every year, over 8 million Americans visit the emergency due to a slip, trip or fall. Accidents involving slip and fall injuries are the most common reason for traumatic brain injuries and all medically treated injuries that are non-fatal in the US. Nearly 25% of accidents that happen at the workplace are slip and falls. Though most slip and fall injuries do not result in death, nearly 30% of these injuries lead to the need for medical care.

The Causes of Slip and Fall Injuries

Personal injury cases that involve a slip or trip that leads to injury on property another's property are generally referred to as slip and falls or premises liability cases. If the injury happens as the result of poor maintenance or negligence, a slip and fall attorneycan provide legal counsel.

There are many hazards that contribute to slip and falls, including:

  • Damaged tiles and ripped carpet
  • Wet floors
  • Spilled food or chemicals
  • Poor lighting
  • Cracks in a sidewalk
  • Broken stairs
  • Potholes
  • Ice and snow
  • Unmarked thresholds
  • Misplaced or damaged handrails
  • Walkways blocked by boxes, rugs, displays or equipment

If a slip and fall injury leads to death, the family may be entitled to compensation, if the accident was due to the creation of a dangerous condition that led to unreasonable risk by the property owner or manager. If someone either causes a condition or knows about it and doesn't take reasonable steps in order to correct it, they may be found liable. In addition to commercial property owners, landlords, property managers and government entities may be found responsible for preventable injuries.

Liability can be tricky to prove. In some cases, multiple individuals or entities are responsible for maintaining a property and keeping it free from danger. If caused by a spill, for example, it must be demonstrated that a representative of the property was aware of the spill and made no reasonable effort to address it.
